Newsletter 28th April 2025
Hello, Welcome to our April meeting. Tonight Jacqueline Iddon from Hardy Plants in Bretherton, Leyland, will be talking about ‘Shrubs of Distinction’. We must all at some time or other want to buy another beautiful shrub for our gardens, so hopefully by the end of this evening we will have a good idea what to look for. Jaqueline has tours round her 1 ½ acres garden, she has plant sales, a walled garden and woodland walkway and many other delights to see. Perhaps we can visit there one day.
We are always looking for ways to make our club better, we are presently doing very well, but please share with us your thoughts of a place to visit or a subject you would like to learn about, we will do our best to keep the club interesting. One thing we do need help with is quite simple and only needs about ½ hour of your time. We always finish with a nice hot cup of tea or coffee and a biscuit, but the committee generally have a few issues after the meeting finishes to sort out, so it would be a great help if we had some volunteers to step in and do the drinks, everything is in the kitchen ready, you just need to pour the tea and top the coffee with hot water, could you please spare a little time to help?, it’s really a rather nice thing to do, you meet all the members and have a quick chat, what better way is there to make new friends. Please, can you help us? We need two people each meeting.
Are you coming to the afternoon visit to Sandymere Gardens on Monday 9th June? We’ve been a few times now and it’s so beautiful. We don’t put transport on for this trip as it’s so close to home, you can go in your own or car share, they don’t have a huge car park so sharing is best. Anyone with room in their car will be happy to give you a lift if need be. We will meet at Sandymere, Post Code CW6 9EH, at 1pm, there are no refreshments available, but picnics are welcome. The committee will subsidise this visit, so the cost is £5.per member and £8 non-members. We have 19 names on the list but only 9 people have paid, we must pay the gardener the full amount on the day. So please if you have still to pay, could you do so ASAP.
The May Day Trip on Monday 19th May to Hodnet Hall Gardens and Wollerton Old Hall Gardens is nearly upon us, Wollerton is said to be ‘A world class example of an English Garden’ and was featured in ‘Monty Don’s British Gardens’. You will need a packed lunch and drinks, and don’t forget your raincoat (The great British weather and all that!) All details can be found on our website, www.frodshamgardeningclub.org The cost for this trip is £32 for members and non-members. If for any reason you cannot come but have booked a place on the coach, PLEASE ring; 01928565600 and say you cannot attend as we have a waiting list.
After the AGM in June, we have our annual competition. This year we want you to bring 3 stems of a single colour in a vase.
A 220 litre cylindrical compost bin is available free to a good home, contact Gwyn on 01928 565600 for more details. Don’t forget your 10% discount at Gleaves Garden Centre
