Welcome to our Christmas meeting

Good Evening and welcome to our Christmas meeting. Tonight our speaker is Peter Llewellyn, Peter is a botanist from Helsby and has visited our club quite a few times over the years, tonight he will be talking about ‘Terrestrial Orchids’, and he will be covering a huge range of Orchids that grow out of the ground.

We hope you found the new layout of the hall better at the last meeting, the raffle is now at the back of the room leaving much less congestion by the door allowing the registration to take place and any payments to be made in peace.  We do need time to prepare for the meetings, hence the need to keep the doors shut until we are  ready, we will continue with this procedure from now on.  We hope you understand and agree with this decision.

We are also upgrading our raffle prizes and if you draw a winning ticket a second time we will ask for a redraw for a different ticket, giving everyone a chance to win a prize. We only have five prizes so this seems more fair.

It is truly hard to believe that we are just four weeks from Christmas, never has a year gone by as quickly as this one.  On 6-8 December the Christmas Tree Festival at the Methodist Church begins. The theme for our tree is ‘Sow it and Grow it’ We shall be dressing it on the 5th December from 1.30pm using all the decorations you, have made. On the morning of 9th December after the festival is finished the tree will be going to Hillcrest Care Home just round the corner from the Church, it will be partially decorated as the residents enjoy  decorating it themselves, It is a sight to behold when all the trees are lit in the Church Hall.

Don’t forget as members of the gardening club you can have 10% discount at Gleaves Garden Centre, every little bit saving is so precious these days, and 10% is a good saving.

Our charity table hasn’t been doing much business lately, Don’t forget if you have any spare plants cuttings or bulbs, gardening magazines, honey  unused gardening equipment then bring them along, someone will probably want them, and a few bob for the charity table is good.

Gwyn and her team have been busy tending to the community gardens around the town, the tubs are ready for bulbs to be planted, she is trying to have all these areas planted up and looking good for the Christmas Festival on Saturday 30th November.

For our first meeting of 2025 on 27th January we have the Head Gardener of Dunham Massey coming to tell us about their ‘Winter Gardens’

Enjoy your evening with us tonight.

Wishing all our members a very Happy Christmas and a Prosperous gardening 2025
